Flynn: Son of Crimson is a 2D action platformer with pixel-art graphics reminiscent of games from the Super Nintendo era. Of course, with the plethora of titles describing these days, it also links to other titles like The messenger and MO: lost. It takes place over multiple stages, some of which have multiple exits that lead to new alternate stages and a linear story. Said story is standalone, and although developer Thunderhorse has said in an interview with Game Rant that it will be considering sequels, there is currently no DLC planned.

Flynn: The Story of Crimson’s Son

The eponymous Flynn is a young man who has lived his entire life in the village of Sanctia alongside his companion: a guardian of the land named Dex who takes the form of a fluffy wolf. Flynn and Dex are called by a goddess to save the land of Rosantica from the Scourge, a menacing force encroaching on their home. Unfortunately, Dex is depleted of her power soon enough, which leads Flynn to realize her ability to control Crimson Energy. He can fashion it around his weapons or arm the energy itself and sets out to save the world and reclaim his power in Dex, all the while unraveling the mystery of his legacy, the reason he can use Crimson Energy. There is enough of it to lead to a side or side game as Thunderhorse wants it to be if funding allows.

The story is decidedly simple, but by no means bad, and it’s a good way to keep the game going across different locations. It’s not exactly the highlight of the game, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for future growth, or for some of the cut content to return. Flynn: Son of Crimson later. Much of this is the elemental magic that Flynn collects throughout the game, which opens up paths and is vital in taking down certain enemies. There are also three distinct Crimson weapons, some more powerful than others. This balance of power and speed is something players will need to keep in mind as they battle enemies and even tackle certain sections of the platform.

The levels are long and varied, each adding new elements to the game for players to face and understand, and all of them interact well with elemental weapons and powers. Although this is not a real Metroidvania, Flynn encourages going back with resources acquired later in the game. Level and variety of weapons are two of the best things about Flynn: Son of Crimson, with another being art. The game is beautiful and sounds pretty good too, with an adventurous yet calming soundtrack. Only time will tell if it will become an enduring classic, but even if it doesn’t, it’s definitely worth checking out on Game Pass, as some will find it to be a more interesting adventure than it is. others.
