Thankfully, a unique, reality-blurring dining concept that kicks off in December offers both, promising to help get rid of the mundaneity of all that time locked up at home.

The ever-imaginative minds of PlayStation have envisioned the ultimate immersive dining experience, merging the virtual sphere with real life for PlayStation to Plate. Building on Australians’ renewed relationship with food and games, they’ve teamed up with chefs at some of Sydney and Melbourne’s best-known restaurants to bring virtual meals from the PlayStation universe to life. Pixels have been replaced with plates and graphics replaced with toppings, giving new meaning to the idea of ​​playing with your food.

Between the heroic dishes depicted on screen and the culinary intrigues woven through various storylines, food has long been an integral part of video game culture. And if you’ve ever wondered what these virtual food items actually taste like, now is your chance. Blending culinary and gaming culture, and pushing the boundaries of gaming into new dimensions, this innovative restaurant concept promises to transport you beyond the screen.

From Friday, December 3 through Sunday, December 12, PlayStation to Plate sees three Australian restaurants each create a limited-edition menu item that reinvents an iconic IRL video game dish. Restaurants will be serving their iconic creations during the ten days of the pop-up, but you can also have any of the dishes delivered to your door with Deliveroo.

So who’s involved in bringing this gaming experience to life – and what dishes can you put your mitts on while PlayStation to Plate is in town?

The burger flipping legends at Mary’s have relied on their expertise to sandwich tasty things between buns to deliver an actual version of Ellie’s steak sandwich. Players who have ventured into the post-apocalyptic world of The Last of Us Part II will recognize this hero dish from the start of the game. Mary’s founders Kenny Graham and Jake Smyth say the virtual location that serves the sandwich spoke to them for its portrayal as a safe haven in the game’s storyline.

Meanwhile, another Sydney restaurant, The Italian Bowl, took inspiration from a critically acclaimed action-adventure title. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. The chefs here have recreated the Thief’s Pasta, which main characters Nate and Elena enjoy together on the couch after a long day. This one is a warm, non-na-approved nod to the way we all bond around sharing food.

In Melbourne, young baker Morgan Hipworth is here to tempt your sweet tooth with his interpretation of Sirangian Honey Mousse. The colorful dessert stars in the intergalactic adventure game Ratchet & Clank: Rift apart, as one of Chef Tulio’s signature creations. Hipworth will be offering this sweet layered delight at their namesake bakery Bistro Morgan.
