The next 40K video game is a free card game

Not content with the Warhammer x Magic: The Gathering crossover slated for August, the dark future of Warhammer 40,000 arrives in a new collectible card game called Warpforge. Just announced as part of the annual Warhammer Skulls for the Skull Throne event, Warpforge will be a free-to-play card game based on “brutal, fast-paced skirmishes.”

According to the press release, it will have single-player campaigns for each of its factions, as well as multiplayer modes with “draft and constructed competitive modes, both in regular play and in time-limited competitions with set rules. ‘single undertaking’. Events called Alliance Wars will “apparently test the mettle of even the most seasoned veterans.”

Warpforge is made by Everguild, who were previously responsible for Horus Heresy: Legions (opens in a new tab), a card game set during a 10,000 year civil war in the past of the 40K universe (a slice of backstory that has been the subject of over 60+ novels). Legions was a perfectly decent budget CCG where your cards slammed into the battlefield via drop pods fired from orbit, which was a nice touch. The map art was a bit uneven, but from what’s been shown, Warpforge looks a lot smoother and more unified in that regard.

Although it launches with maps based on some of Warhammer 40,000’s most popular factions, with Necrons, Orks, Eldars, Space Marines, Chaos Space Marines and Tyranids featured in promotional material, d Other armies will follow in regular expansions. Expect the t’au, battle sisters, dark eldar and possibly the imperial guard to follow, but maybe don’t hold your breath for more obscure choices like squats – dwarf bikers of the space with tough guys combat trains (opens in a new tab) who one day deserve their own match (#justice4squats).

Warpforge should be released in 2023 on Steam (opens in a new tab), with a mobile version to follow and cross-platform support promised. It already has the mandatory Discord Channel (opens in a new tab).
