Forbidden Horizon West is considered by many to be the most beautiful PlayStation 5 game available. Like many other games on PS5, west forbidden has two visual modes: a “favorable performance” mode that targets 60 fps and a “favorable resolution” mode that locks in at 30 fps with higher graphical fidelity. While both look exceptional, there are differences in the rendering and technical aspects of the modes. This article analyzes the two visual modes to decide which one is best to play west forbidden.
west forbidden Performance mode targets 60 fps at 1800p resolution, according to Digital Foundry. The result achieves graphical fidelity close to motion resolution mode. Still, edges and distant objects appear less sharp.
At launch, performance mode had an issue with visuals thinning and thinning out aggressively, causing a “flickering effect”. The glitch persists after several patches, according to some players. Guerrilla Games has discontinued addressing the issue in the latest patch notes as a “permanent issue”.
The fixes have helped performance mode visuals in other areas, however. These include sharper clouds and better looking foliage. It’s unclear if a future patch will fix the performance mode bugs, as developer Guerilla Games has already tried to fix it once.

Most stutters occur after a camera cut in a cutscene, except for the added effects during destructive battles against larger machines. There are occasional pop-ins from buildings and foliage, but recent patches have reduced these occurrences.
Although the resolution is not 4K, the game still looks amazing when climbing the high mountains and looking down the valleys between the next formation. The lingering shimmer issue, however, detracts from the experience.
Switching to resolution mode, it becomes apparent how sharper on-screen assets and characters look in native 4K resolution. The tradeoff is the loss of frame rate, but the eyes adjust to the slower speed after several minutes of play. Once adjusted, the game takes on a more cinematic look. Effects such as ambient occlusion and motion blur help to enhance this effect, the latter of which is adjustable in the game settings.
Shades like peachfuzz on Aloy’s face are now apparent by furthering the resolution. Even from a distance, textures on flowers and tall grass appear at a much higher resolution. The machines are particularly sharp and every sharp edge doesn’t look blurry compared to performance mode. Photo mode highlights the increased fidelity when inspecting terrain, clouds, and other pixel densities of on-screen assets.
Tough battles against bigger machines in West forbidden, like the Slitherfang, can cause a lot of particles and screen destruction. The effects can cause stuttering, but only in extreme cases. Otherwise, the added fidelity contributes to the overall feel of the gameplay, exhibiting a lack of sharpness that players sometimes can’t ignore in performance mode.
What is better?
While many are used to 60 fps, Resolution mode provides a better visual fidelity experience that rarely drops. It’s more stable than performance mode and doesn’t have the flickering glitch of the other, though future fixes may help. However, Guerilla Games seems to have stopped fixing the issue for now. Solve mode is the best option to play west forbidden From a technical point of view.
Overall, it’s up to the player what they sacrifice during gameplay. The back and forth is also good for those who don’t mind readjusting to the slower frame rate. Suppose a section of west forbidden would play better with more frames. In this case, the game will always look good and the player can always go back.
