Inscryption and Unpacking top nominations at this year’s Indie Games Festival.

Established in 1998 – 24 years ago and yes thank you it makes me feel very, very old – the Independent Games Festival was established to “encourage innovation in game development and recognize the best game developers indie “, much like a Sundance for indie games.

“Unpacking is an irresistible thing,” we said in our roundup of the best games of 2021, which Unpacking came out on top. “Here’s a puzzle game, on the surface, about tidying things up, a premise that’s pretty compelling on its own. There’s something calming about the fundamentals of neatly folding T-shirts and socks while proudly stacking books on once-empty shelves.

“Combine that with the melancholy of a life packed in cardboard boxes, the slight voyeuristic thrill of rummaging through someone else’s possessions, and the power of a life story told through the objects that a person chooses to wear with it over the years and you have something really powerful. I’ve never played anything like Unpacking: I’ve never encountered such human storytelling in a game that is remarkably absent from it. What a success it is. “
