One of the oldest Xbox pet peeves of Xbox fans is the lack of JRPGs and Japanese-style games on the platform. With big hitters like Shin Megumi Tensei, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and Persona 5 skipping Xbox, many anime fans have been pushed to look to competing platforms like the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC on the Xbox Series. X or Xbox Series S to get their anime patch.

Astria Ascendant (September 30, 2021)
Astria Ascending is a French-led JRPG with developers who have worked on Final Fantasy and other major JRPGs on the team. With a “mature story” written by Kazushige Nojima of Final Fantasy VII fame and compositions by Hitoshi Sakimoto of Final Fantasy XII fame, Astria Ascending is a 2D JRPG with rich and deep card-based combat mechanics, inspired by Final Fantasy VIII. Triple Triad.
The game is scheduled for September 30, 2021, launching on Xbox and other platforms, and will launch directly in Xbox Game Pass.
Lost judgment (September 24, 2021)
Lost Judgment is a crime thriller spin-off from the Yakuza franchise and follows on from the previous game, Judgment. Part brawler and crime thriller, players investigate the red light district of the fictional Kamurocho city in Tokyo alongside a series of brutal and bloody murders.
Tales of the Ascension (September 10, 2021)
Tales of Arise is the first “Tales of” game to be released on Xbox in some time, slated for launch on September 10, 2021. Tales of Arise is an action-oriented JRPG set in the medieval world of Dahna. A technologically superior nation of Rena takes advantage of the people of Dahna, and Alphen and his friends stand up to free the abused Dahnan people.
Melty Blood: Lumina Type (September 30, 2021)
Melty Blood: Type Lumina (not to be confused with Nokia Lumia) is an upcoming 2D fighting game based on the visual novel “Tsukihime”. The game is scheduled for September 30, 2021, across all platforms.
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water (Oct 28, 2021)
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water was originally a Wii-U game, but has been relaunched for modern consoles. Fatal Frame is a popular thriller series where players use photo equipment to hunt down ghosts and solve puzzles. Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is a heavy story, spanning multiple periods, spanning multiple characters, and may well be worth checking out this Halloween.
Edge of eternity (Q4, 2021)
Edge of Eternity is a recently released JRPG on PC and will be released on consoles later this year in 2021. Edge of Eternity (often referred to as EoE) is a Final Fantasy-style turn-based RPG, launched by a group of developers as a love letter to the genre.
You party with Daryon and Selene and explore the fantastic world of Héryon, on a quest to contain an oozing disease called corrosion, devastating the earth and the people. As you search for a solution, a greater conspiracy begins to unfold, in a kingdom beset by war and strife.
Eiyuden Chronicle: One Hundred Heroes (2022)
Announced as part of the Xbox E3 2021 big show, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is an upcoming 2.5D JRPG with classic turn-based mechanics, built by a team of industry veterans. Not much is known about the game other than its gripping art and interesting combat, but the game is slated for Xbox in 2022 and looks pretty cool.
Lost eidolons (2022+)
Lost Eidolons is a tactical RPG developed in Korea and inspired by Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem. With a 30+ hour campaign of content with in-depth tactical play, Lost Eidolons is a low fantasy war strategy game that will make its way to Xbox and PC sometime in 2022 and beyond.
What are you looking forward to?
While there aren’t a huge amount of games on the horizon that follow the classic J style, there are a few that are worth the wait regardless. Tales of Arise looks particularly promising and has an Xbox demo that you can try out right now. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s Judgment was an instant classic, and Lost Judgment seems to come just as close to satisfying that Yakuza itch, and might even become one of the best Xbox games out there.
