Even with high-octane action, competitive shooters, and Western RPGs hitting the market, the JRPG subgenre is booming in 2022, as evidenced by Monolith Soft’s recent release. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 for the Nintendo Switch. The year is entering its final stages, but there are still a few standout JRPGs for fans to watch.
Likewise, there are already a few high-profile games set to launch next year. pokescarlet emon and Purple will undoubtedly be the biggest mainstream commercial success at the end of 2022, but Square Enix has a lot of great Final Fantasy titles on the horizon as well.
Final Fantasy XVI
After garnering a huge amount of goodwill to shoot Final Fantasy XIV in one of the series’ most compelling MMORPGs and stories, producer Naoki Yoshida and co. have set high expectations for the future Final Fantasy XVI. The game seems inspired by the devil may cryof thrilling combat, and its setting seems to be influenced by medieval dark fantasy.
Political intrigue and character drama are at the forefront of the game’s trailers so far, along with the roles of that world’s summoner – Eikons – in history and lore. It seems to have what it takes to be one of the best modern Final Fantasy games, and XVI will launch in summer 2023 on PlayStation 5.
Soul Hackers 2
Atlus has exploded the popularity of its Shin Megami Tensei spin-off series Character in the west, but with this new success came revivals of other sub-series. After about 25 years, hacker souls 2 — sequel to PS1 Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers — is finally around the corner.
This game takes on a heavy, vibrant sci-fi twist in its setting, with Soul Hackers 2 set during a war between two Devil Summoner factions, as two supernatural, digital beings descend upon the world to save humanity from cataclysm. Gameplay is expected to be turn-based, mixing physical and magical attacks in tandem with summoned demons, as well as elements of social simulation outside of battle. Soul Hackers 2 out August 26, 2022 for PS4, PS5, XBO, XSX|S and PC.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
After Pokemon Legends: Arceus gave the main series of games a well-deserved creative jolt, the next Scarlet and Purple seek to develop the exciting new formula of its predecessor. This pair of games will be the first two of the pokemons 9th generation, and it will feature a seamless open-world setting for the first time in the series since Arceus used more Freak Hunter– like segmented areas.
Along with encountering a new batch of original species and alternate forms, players will also be able to complete Gym Leader challenges in any order they choose and engage in cooperative gameplay throughout the story. These games have a lot to do to become one of the best core games Pokemon games, but it’s great to see the series finally getting more ambitious. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion
Despite its short duration, Square Enix’s recent Final Fantasy VII the celebratory flow turned out to be quite hectic. In addition to the long-awaited reveal of the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remakea surprise announcement of a remaster for Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII also thrilled the fans.
The original PlayStation Portable version was already one of the best Final Fantasy spin-off games and the remaster – dubbed Meeting — looks impressive for a remaster. Many fans probably thought the game was officially lost in time, but Zack Fair will get the second life he deserves before Renaissance. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion releases end of 2022 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, Switch and PC.
Ogre Tactic: Reborn
Commonly cited as one of the most influential games in the subgenre, the tactical RPG Ogre Tactics: Let’s Hang Together was critically acclaimed during the PS1 era. It was then remade for the PSP in 2010, and that version is now set for a remaster this winter.
Title Ogre Tactic: Reborn, Square Enix is looking to improve the game’s visuals, introduce quality of life features to streamline the experience, and make the game more accessible without losing depth. The story takes place in the fantastic archipelago called Valeria, where its only kingdom is plunged into civil war after the death of the king. Ogre Tactic: Reborn out November 22, 2022 for PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake (speculation)
Although he was sadly silent on the news behind HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest IIIthe initial look given in last summer’s reveal looked stunning as is. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age helped propel the series’ popularity onto a more global scale, as it was praised for blending modern JRPG mechanics with classic mechanics.
Similarly, the warm welcome given to the 2018s Octopath Traveler sparked excitement behind the “HD-2D” aesthetic for JRPGs in the modern era, so HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest III seems like a great idea to capitalize on both fronts. Modernized pixel art and 16-bit gameplay features are to be expected, and it’s possible the remake could fit into late 2022 or next year’s slate of games.
The Diofield Chronicle
Whereas Final Fantasy and dragon quest are certainly the bread and butter of Square Enix, fans were also happy to see the publisher release new, smaller-scale IPs in between. And with the resurgence of tactical RPGs, thanks to the successes of characters like fire emblemSquare Enix’s in-house development studio partners with Lancarse to release The Diofield Chronicle.
Set in an original fantasy world mixed with industrial age elements, the player will follow a group of mercenaries hired to repel the invasion of the emboldened Trovelt-Schoevian Empire. To change things up, the gameplay isn’t limited to tile-based movement. On the contrary, it’s more fluid and the turns are played in real time. The Diofield Chronicle looks promising, and fans won’t have to wait long since it releases on September 22, 2022 for PS4, PS5, XBO, XSX | S, Switch and PC.
Final Fantasy VII Revival
Of course, the announcement of the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Revival was the main event of the anniversary stream. The wait was long between the revelation of Remake and its 2020 release, and fans are pleasantly surprised to hear the sequel’s release window.
FFVIIR was highly acclaimed for its excellent real-time action combat system, expanding on the Midgar part of the story and fleshing out the colorful cast of characters. Some longtime fans have admittedly felt taken aback and worried about the potential plot changes, but many are surely eager to see where. Final Fantasy VII Revival picks up the story when it releases in Winter 2023 for PS5 – assuming it’s not delayed.
Persona 3 Handheld (Port)
Persona 5 Royal was the shot in the arm for the series in the west and that success continued on the PC port of 2020 persona 4 golden. And after years of waiting and fan requests for more ports, 4 golden and 5 royals will make their way to other platforms, as well as the first port of Persona 3 since its release on PSP.
The original version was praised for its characters, story, turn-based combat, and the now widely loved social simulation element. On the independent side, Sabotage Studio’s sea of stars was revealed as a JRPG love letter to the classic 16-bit days of the subgenre. It takes some creative cues like those of Square Enix the trigger of a stopwatch while making its own mark on classic gameplay conventions.
Following the two children of the solstice, as they repel the attacks of an evil alchemist, players will engage in creative turn-based combat that incorporates attack combos and rewards timing. It also rewards exploration through various means, and players will be able to dive into this new adventure when sea of stars launching in 2023 for PS4, PS5, Switch and PC.
